Haida Art and Old Masset Village Council

Haida art abounds on one of BC’s largest islands, thanks to the First Nation who calls the area home. Old Masset Village Council resides on the northern tip of Graham Island off the coast of British Columbia. Many of its members are accomplished at producing Haida art, as you’ll see by the number of galleries and studios in the village.

Graham Island is the largest island in a group of islands called the Queen Charlotte Islands. Theses islands are also known as Haida Gwai, which translates as ‘land of the Haida.’ Old Masset Village Council are members of the Haida tribe.

Closely Linked Communities

Old Masset Village Council resides in Old Masset. This community is the northernmost community on the island and is one of two Haida communities. It is located just 3 km north of the town Masset.

Masset and Old Masset are closely linked and are commonly referred to as Greater Masset. It is said that the two towns may be the most closely linked First Nations and non-First Nations communities in the nation. The residents of the communities have a common water system, sewage treatment system and recreation centre.

Old Masset Village Council has a registered population of around 2600. Many of these people live on 27 reserves that cover about 969 hectares. The largest reserve is Masset 1. Due to weather, the region does not have a year-round road.

Haida Art in Old Masset

In recent years, Haida art has come to figure prominently in the economy of Old Masset. Several galleries and studios have opened, taking advantage of the tourist trade as well as of the general admiration for Haida art. Other economic activities include eco-tourism, bed and breakfast operations and other services addressing tourists’ needs.

Totem poles dot the landscape throughout Old Masset. In fact, this village has the biggest collection of totem poles found on the Queen Charlotte Islands. Each pole is unique and worthy of a look if you’re visiting.

You’ll find quality Haida art at the many gift shops and studios here. Many of the studios are on the private property of the artist and the artist may keep irregular hours. Most artists are very happy to have anyone stop by to take look, shop or even discuss Haida art. You’d be wise to call ahead of time to schedule an appointment if you really want to see someone’s work.
